Rodney Griffin

“God uses common garments to do uncommon things”. Rodney Griffin’s career and calling is summarized by this line from one of his songs. A preacher’s kid raised in Somerset, Kentucky,

Rodney lived a simple life centered around his country church. He realized his love for Gospel music early on as he helped form his very first group in high school, The Fellowship Quartet. Rodney sang there until he would graduate from Berea College and move East to Virginia to work at Newport News Shipbuilding. As God opened doors, a few years later he would begin a career in Gospel music that has continued now for over three decades.

Rodney joined the Dixie Melody Boys in 1992 where his first song was recorded. In December 1993, Rodney joined Greater Vision where he continues to serve. This thirty-plus year relationship has proven to be very successful for both, as he has penned over one hundred and forty of their songs including their signature song, “My Name Is Lazarus.” This song, along with six others: “Just One More Soul” (2000); “Just Ask” (2004); “Faces” (2005); “If You Knew Him” (2010) – Perrys; “Preacher Tell Me Like It Is” (2014), and “Start With Well Done” (2023) has received the honor of Song of the Year by the voters of the Singing News Fan Awards. On five occasions, the fans have named him Favorite Baritone and have twice named him Favorite Lead, the part he currently sings. His songs have been recorded by nearly every major artist in southern gospel music, leading to 13 BMI awards and 21 number one songs to his credit. The fans have voted him Songwriter of the Year an unprecedented24 times beginning in 1999.

And it’s all because, “God uses common garments to do uncommon things”.
