The Kentucky Music Hall of Fame is proud to announce that Charlie Gearheart of the legendary Goose Creek Symphony will be inducted into the Class of 2026.
Very few Kentucky-born rock music journeys match the scope and spirit of Goose Creek Symphony. Rooted in the Appalachian traditions of Floyd County, Charlie Gearheart helped create a groundbreaking sound that blended mountain music with rock, Americana, and psychedelic influences. Across four early albums recorded in Arizona, the band carved out a style that was both deeply Kentucky and wildly innovative.
After a long hiatus—what Gearheart fondly called a “14-year fishing trip”—Goose Creek Symphony roared back to life in the 1990s. What followed was a remarkable revival, with sold-out shows, a new generation of fans, and a renewed appreciation for their genre-defying “electric mountain music.” From intimate acoustic sets to full-scale performances with fiddles and horns, the band’s music continued to evolve while staying true to its roots.
Some bands that have been influenced by Goose Creek Symphony include Phish, The Kentucky Headhunters, The Band, Grateful Dead, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. At the heart of it all was Charlie Gearheart—a storyteller, a pioneer, and a proud Kentuckian who never chased fame, but instead followed the music, the stories, and the freedom found somewhere between the hills and a clear mountain stream.
As he once said, “To me, Kentucky is still at the basic roots of our music.”

I sure do miss that man. Such a pleasure to have known him, I’ll treasure those memories forever. This induction is so well deserved!
